In short

What causes hair loss in women?

Hair loss in women may present very differently to men, including increased shedding, loss of volume, widening of the parting or more generalised thinning. Understanding what is contributing to the change is particularly important here.

Hormonal changes, menopause, postpartum shedding, stress, nutritional factors, genetics, general health and scalp conditions may all warrant consideration. Where further medical investigation or referral is advisable, that may be recommended before treatment begins.

How it tends to present

  • Increased or sudden shedding
  • Loss of volume and density
  • Widening of the parting
  • Diffuse thinning across the scalp
  • Localised or patchy hair loss
  • Changes in scalp health or hair quality

What may be contributing

Hormonal changes, menopause, postpartum shedding, stress, nutritional factors, genetics, general health and scalp conditions may all warrant consideration.

Two people experiencing what appears to be similar hair loss may require very different approaches. Where further medical investigation or referral is advisable, this may be recommended before treatment begins.

That last point matters. A clinic that treats every widening parting the same way is not assessing, it is guessing.

What we would do

Begin with a hair and scalp consultation and a microscopic assessment, so we can look at the scalp and the hair that remains rather than guessing from the surface. From there, stabilise, support the existing hair through a personalised programme, and reassess with a like for like comparison against your baseline images.

Suitability

Honest about who
we can help.

It may suit you if

  • Your parting has widened or your volume has dropped
  • You are shedding noticeably more than usual
  • You want the cause investigated rather than covered up
  • You would like progress compared against a record, not a memory

It is not the answer if

  • You want an outcome guaranteed before assessment
  • There is no viable hair left in the affected area
  • The likely cause needs medical investigation we would refer you for first
  • You are expecting visible change within a few weeks

The evidence

Real patients,
unretouched, with
their consent.

Microscopic images are taken on the first visit. Progress is then formally reviewed every 2 months, so what changed is compared against a record rather than against recollection. Drag any slider to compare.

Photographs are of our own patients and published with their consent. Hair restoration is gradual and results vary between individuals. Nothing here is a guarantee of outcome, and suitability is established at consultation first.

How it actually runs

Nothing starts
before the assessment.

01

Consultation

Complimentary, unhurried, and typically 45 to 60 minutes. We take the time to understand your concerns and your goals before anything is recommended.

02

Assessment

Your hair and scalp are examined under the microscope, on a screen you can see for yourself, and a baseline record is taken on day one.

03

Foundation

For most patients the work begins with the environment the hair grows in, not with a therapy layered on top of an untreated scalp.

04

Review

Progress is formally reviewed every 2 months against those baseline images. If your hair is not responding, we would rather know at two months than at twelve.

I have been visiting the Hampton Clinic for ten years and there is absolutely nowhere else I would go for my treatments. Customers are always welcomed by a warm, polite and efficient team who are experts in their field. Treatments are carried out in an extremely respectful and personal manner.

I have been coming here for a very long time for laser hair growth treatment. I originally knew Tarek from a previous clinic, and I have continued to trust him. It never feels rushed or clinical in a cold way. There is always good conversation, genuine care, and a real personal touch, which makes a big difference.

I am impressed, and learnt a lot at my hair loss consultation today at The Hampton Clinic Bristol. They explained everything, what is the cause of my thinning hair, and advised what I should use and take.

Questions

Before
you book.

Why is my parting getting wider?

A widening parting is one of the most common ways hair loss presents in women, alongside increased shedding, loss of volume and more generalised thinning. Hormonal changes, menopause, postpartum shedding, stress, nutritional factors, genetics, general health and scalp conditions may all warrant consideration, which is why the cause is assessed before anything is treated.

Is female hair loss treated the same way as male hair loss?

Not necessarily. Hair loss in women may present very differently and the factors contributing to it can be very different, so understanding what is contributing to the change is particularly important before deciding on treatment.

I am shedding after having a baby. Will it come back?

Postpartum shedding is one of the factors we consider at assessment. Rather than predicting an outcome from a website, the consultation establishes what is actually happening to your hair and whether anything needs doing at all.

Will I be told I need treatment?

Only if it is genuinely appropriate. If Tarek does not believe treatment is appropriate or likely to benefit you, he will tell you rather than recommend treatment for the sake of treating you.

Next step

Find out what is
behind the shedding,
then treat that.

Hormonal, nutritional and scalp factors are all worth considering, and which of them applies to you is what the assessment is for. The consultation takes 45 to 60 minutes, is complimentary, and carries no obligation.
